Tangier Downtown
Car rental in central Tangier
Sovoycars offers a city-centre pick-up in Tangier, separate from our desk at Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport. It is the sensible choice if you arrive by sea or by rail rather than by air. We are a Moroccan rental company with our own fleet — not a price-comparison site.
Tangier is the one Moroccan city most people don't fly into
That is the point of this location. Tangier is Morocco's gateway from Europe by ferry — passenger crossings from Tarifa reach the city port in about an hour, and Tanger Med, roughly 45 km east, handles the Algeciras routes. It is also the northern terminus of the Al Boraq high-speed line, about 1 hour 20 from Rabat and just over 2 hours from Casablanca.
If you step off a ferry or a train, collecting a car in town avoids a pointless trip out to the airport and any airport surcharge.
Where a car takes you from Tangier
- Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules — Atlantic cliffs about half an hour west, where the two seas meet.
- Asilah — walled coastal town known for its murals, roughly 45 minutes south.
- Chefchaouen — the blue city in the Rif, about 2 hours on a climbing mountain road.
- Tetouan and Martil — Andalusian heritage and Mediterranean beaches, around an hour east.
- Rabat — about 3 hours south on the A1.
Driving in and around Tangier
- The medina is steep and largely pedestrian. Park in a guarded car park in the ville nouvelle rather than trying to drive in.
- The A1 south is a toll road. Carry cash as well as a card — not every booth takes cards.
- The Chefchaouen road climbs into the Rif with tight bends and slow progress. Allow more time than the distance suggests.
- Wind. The strait is windy much of the year; be attentive on exposed coastal stretches.
Choosing a category
- Economy or compact — easiest for the city, Asilah and Cap Spartel.
- Intermediate saloon — more comfortable on the A1 toward Rabat or Casablanca.
- SUV or crossover — pleasant on the Rif roads to Chefchaouen.
- Premium — business travel, common in Tangier given the industrial zone.

Frequently asked questions
Where exactly do I collect the car?
We agree the meeting point in central Tangier with you ahead of the collection date, based on how and when you are arriving.
I'm arriving by ferry from Spain — is this the right location?
Yes. Passenger ferries from Tarifa dock at the city port, so a city-centre collection is far more convenient than the airport. Tell us your crossing and we will time the handover to it.
Can I collect in town and return at the airport?
Usually yes, subject to availability. Mention it when booking.
Is insurance included?
Most rates include basic cover, extendable during booking.
