Menara is the closest of Morocco's major airports to the city it serves. The terminal sits roughly 6 km from Jemaa el-Fnaa — about 15 minutes by car — so a rental collected on arrival puts you in the medina before a taxi queue would have cleared. Why a car makes sense in Marrakech (and when it doesn't)
Honest answer first: you do not need a car to see the medina. The old city is a dense pedestrian maze, most of it closed to traffic, and hotels inside the walls rarely have parking. If your whole trip is Jemaa el-Fnaa, the souks and a riad, a car will sit unused and cost you parking.
A rental earns its keep the moment you leave the walls:
- The High Atlas — Imlil and the Toubkal trailhead are around 1 hour 30 minutes south. No direct public transport.
- Ourika Valley — roughly 1 hour, waterfalls and Berber villages, an easy half-day.
- Agafay — the stony desert 40 minutes from the city, popular for sunset camps.
- Essaouira — about 2 hours 30 minutes west on a straightforward road to the Atlantic.
- Ouarzazate and the Draa — over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, roughly 4 hours. Winding, high, and worth a full day.
Driving in and around Marrakech
City traffic mixes cars, scooters and calèches, and lane discipline is loose. Two practical points that matter more here than elsewhere in Morocco:
- Park outside the medina. Guarded car parks sit near the main gates — Bab Doukkala, Bab Jdid, the Koutoubia — and a gardien will expect a small cash tip. Do not attempt to drive to a riad door.
- The Tizi n'Tichka is a mountain road. If Ouarzazate or the Sahara is on your route, take a vehicle with real engine capacity and start early; the pass tops 2,260 m and takes longer than the distance suggests.
- Heat. July and August routinely pass 40 °C. Confirm the air conditioning at handover, and carry water on long transfers.
Which category suits the trip
- Economy or compact — best if you are staying near the city and making short valley trips. Easiest to park.
- Intermediate — more comfortable for the Essaouira or Casablanca runs on open road.
- SUV or 4x4 — the sensible choice for the Atlas, Agafay pistes or anything heading toward the desert.
- Premium — for business travel and hotel arrivals.

Usually not. Most riads sit inside pedestrian alleys. Park at a guarded lot near the nearest gate and walk in — many riads will send someone with a cart for luggage if you ask ahead.
Do I need a 4x4 for the Atlas?
Not for surfaced roads to Imlil or Ourika — a normal car handles those. Choose a 4x4 if you plan unsurfaced tracks or are continuing toward the desert.
Can I return the car at another Moroccan city?
