Rabat–Salé is the airport of Morocco's capital, sitting across the Bou Regreg in Salé, about 8 km east-north-east of Rabat. A different kind of rental market
Rabat is an administrative and diplomatic capital rather than a resort. Rentals here skew toward business travel, embassy and institutional visitors, and people heading somewhere else — not weekend tourism. Two consequences worth planning around:
- You may not need a car inside Rabat. The Rabat–Salé tramway links the two cities and most central districts, and the historic core is compact and walkable. If your business is downtown, a car is optional.
- You almost certainly want one to leave. Rabat sits on Morocco's best motorway network, which makes it an efficient starting point rather than a destination in itself.
Where the roads go from Rabat
- Casablanca — about 90 km south-west, roughly an hour on the A3 motorway. The most-driven corridor in the country.
- Meknes and Volubilis — the Roman site is around 2 hours 30 inland; one of the best day trips in Morocco and poorly served by public transport.
- Fes — roughly 2 hours 30 by motorway.
- Kenitra and Moulay Bousselham — north toward the lagoon and birdwatching country.
- Tangier — about 3 hours north on the A1.
In Rabat itself
If you do keep the car in town, the sights are spread out enough to justify it:
- Kasbah des Oudayas — the blue-and-white citadel above the river mouth.
- Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V.
- Chellah — a Roman settlement turned Merinid necropolis, on the city's edge.
- Salé — across the river, quieter and far less visited than Rabat.
Rabat's modern centre is UNESCO-listed alongside the historic city, and it is noticeably calmer to drive than Casablanca.
Practical notes
- The airport is in Salé, not Rabat. Follow signs for Rabat centre and cross the Bou Regreg; allow around 20 minutes, longer at rush hour.
- Motorway tolls. The A1 and A3 are toll roads. Keep some cash in the car — card acceptance at booths is not universal.
- Government quarter parking. Streets around ministries and embassies have restrictions and a visible police presence. Use signed car parks rather than improvising.
Choosing a category
- Economy or compact — fine for the city and the Casablanca run.
- Intermediate — the comfortable choice for motorway distances to Fes or Tangier.
- Premium — commonly requested here for meetings and institutional visits.
- SUV — useful if you are continuing to the Middle Atlas.
